DIY Doll Period Kits

DIY Doll Period Kits

I have seen requests for a doll period kit for a very long time, and they haven’t stopped. I always just passed over them, but they stick out. Some comments recently made me realize that these dolls are an important part of some girls lives. Girls are close to their dolls, and they want their dolls to share the same experiences they are having. It might seem silly or weird, but after reading a good bit of messages for these period kits, I decided to craft it. Some girls get their periods at a really young age, some parents use the dolls as a guide for their special needs children, and some teens are still into dolls. Whatever the reason is for girls wanting this craft, I’m in. I don’t mean to offend anyone with this craft, and if you could read all the requests I did you would understand. I hope this craft is accepted by most and educational for those who needed it for that purpose.

I want to thank you for this from the bottom of my heart. My daughter is nine and has not had her period yet. However, she hangs out with eleven to twelve year olds in our neighbourhood. I wasn’t even thinking about having the talk with her yet about this, but after reading all of these comments, and realizing that this is about to begin or could have already started for some of her friends, was a complete eye opening experience for me. So I sat her down the other night, and I had the talk with her very frankly and openly, and it was incredible how mature she was about it. I was totally wrong to think that she wasn’t ready, or that she wouldn’t understand. I am so glad that she is now aware, and won’t be frightened if she gets her period one day out of the blue. She could very well since she was very quick in developing other things like her twelve year molars at age eight (the dentist was blown away by that). Thank you so much!! ?

Lainey, this is for you and all the others who are bullied and teased over weight or being more developed, don’t listen to the garbage, you are a human being and for that you are beautiful! I want to share a story about my youngest daughter, she was awkward looking when she was young , had this big forehead and bubble eyes, a widows peak hairline, and she was a bit bigger than others, she was taller too, to add insult to injury she went bald at 7!! Had to wear hats, it was against the rules but we got special permission, that caused a lot of meanness!! As she grew older her eyes were so big and she had a weird tongue, people said she looked retarded(hate that word!!)well as she grew so did her beauty, inside and out, you can see photos of her on my FB page, she is drop dead gorgeous!!! When people see her from her past they don’t know it’s her, don’t listen to that crap!! You can look her up on my page under Nancy L Solt, her name is Courtney. Lainey, it gets better, I PROMISE!! Stay true to you!!!

THANK YOU!!!! I have a 10 year old daughter who has her period. It is hard for these young girls to be the first to develop and the first to need to carry these supplies. Having a set for her doll will make her more comfortable. We will be crafting these together. What a great opportunity for us to craft and talk.

For those of you who feel this is inappropriate, don’t show it to your daughter. This is a natural fact of life. No one should be made to feel ashamed.

I just wanted to say that I, too, am a parent and my daughter is 10.5. We have already had the talk several years ago. I began my period when I was 9 and my Mother was 8! My Mother, however, never had a talk with me even after I had my period and many girls my age for many years didn’t have one nor knew what they were. I am one of those who felt alone. It wasn’t until I was 10, and moved to another country, I was not alone at all.

AGI, asked me what I thought before posting this a week ago and I thought it was an educational craft. I believe American Girl even has books on this topic. I think many girls see these not only in their own bathroom but many public bathrooms have these on the walls to purchase.

Concerned parent, read Lainey’s reply, please. This is a CHILD saying she has no friends and her dolls help her with life, as does my GD. I don’t share this with anyone, my GD mother walked out, her father passed, talk about rough life before 6! Her dolls are her world, I hear her talking to them about life all the time, she has someone, me, but she also has 8 girls(dolls) that listen to her, they are her world!! Not every child has a perfect home.

I love this! I think it’s stupid for people to protect their daughters from this. I mean, it’s natural, so why not tell your 8 or 10 year old child about periods. This is perfect for me to connect to my dolls and have them be like me. You people out there who think this is ” inappropriate” are just terrible.

    1. Grandmother to concerned parent
      February 25, 2017 at 9:50 am –

To Concerned parent, I have read through the comments on this very thoughtfully, from a mother and a grand mother I want to respond with a well thought out response, I understand your concerns, first I have to say you mentioned you never monitored the crafts before, do if she had taken the stance of asking parents for their opinions, you would have not seen it, second, the national average for a girl to have the change of life now is starting at 9 years old, wether you believe that or not, it’s true, it’s very sad that our girls are turning to women at that age, but it is what it is, you have every right to keep your children away from the blog, but I want to ask you to seriously ask yourself ” what is that teaching them”? It will teach them that freedom is controlled. Do your children watch TV? Their are commercials that are teaching our children how great “pleasure” is with the enhancement commercials, showing people together in ways we don’t want them to see. I’m being very careful with my words as children do read these. Children learn more about this type of stuff on the playground as it is, don’t be afraid of them learning this at age 8, mine were 8, my GD is 8, the fact is this has been around for dolls for a long time, there is a site called lammily that does this, because so many people follow AGI it’s now in people’s faces because we love what she does and we sit on the edge of our seats “waiting ” for the next craft!! my point is it’s a mixed world we live in, our job as parents is to help children understand the facts of life. I applaud you for being that parent that has proactively thought about this conversation with your children, the point is, you are an annomily, unfortunately, but true. There are girls in there teens begging for help, Rudy saw this and knew she could offer that help through a simple craft, there’s nothing bad about it, it might embarrass a parent or a child, but it’s okay, it’s a natural fact of life. I had the “girl” talk with my boys also, you know why? I did NOT want them to think it was ok to tease a girl about it, kids make fun of things they don’t understand, my boys were embarrassed, but guess what, not one time did they make fun. Instead of condemning because you are having this talk sooner than expected, be grateful there is someone helping teens, pre-teens and 7-9 year olds that no one is going to help, those are the ones that someday will tease your children. Think of the girls that have no mom, and those dads that don’t know what to do. This has been a blessing for them. I learned a long time ago ” take what you need and leave the rest” with this situation, craft what you want, but allow the ones that need this to do so without feeling like they are doing something horrible. Rudy is a mom of both girls and boys, she has her readers best interest, if she didn’t, she could and would charge for her plans, a lot of cafting blogs do now. AG is a very upstanding co, and they trust her with every review, she has people begging her to review for them, because they know she cares. Those young girls, parents, grand parents that begged for this, did it for a reason, do you think that was an easy request?? Or the parents they are saying ” I don’t know how” the kids are saying ” no one helps me” if this helped just one of them, then it’s well worth it. Again, I applaud you as a parent, but remember not many children have that type of parenting, as the saying goes ” it takes a village” I will take a risk and say I’m sure your talk will go well, and I’m sure they will appreciate it more than you know, and now those sensitive lines of communication are open and you will look back and appreciate it more than you think. Good luck to you, and Rudy, please don’t let this detour you from teaching our children, I can’t think of a better role model in their lives!!!

If you have a problem, the answer is simple. Don’t watch. This video will help 10x the girls than the number of moms that will be offended. The goal of American girls are to entertain and help children and if this makes a girl feel okay or “normal” bc their doll is like them, then I give nothing but praise to rudy to listening and acting to help.

Are you telling me your 8 year old child has never seen these products in your home or a store Concerned Parent? I find that hard to believe. ? I do find it odd when people are annoyed that they are forced to parent and have a normal conversation with their children and complain about it. Sounds like AGI did you a favor because age 8 is cutting it close.

    1. Concerned Parent
      February 25, 2017 at 8:45 am –

Concerned parent …my daughter has watched your videos for quite some time and I have always thought theyou were great and safe without having to monitor until now. I don’t believe you really thought this through….although you may have had requests for this I think you also need to think of the entire audience you broadcast too. I realize the importance of education and knowledge but that is still the parents jobs to do.
If you have a “child” asking for something of this manner because they are uncomfortable etc. Possibly a better solution would have been to personally send this to them or make a site for older or pre-teens. Or possibly give parents a chance to weigh in on this one your video blogs…
My daughter is 8 years old and was unaware of what a period is until now….her and I would have had that conversation when the time was right for us but thanks to this video I am now having this conversation on our family Saturday morning….not impressed.
I am really considering whether to let her watch these now as I feel I have to monitor it now ?

Dollylover, it’s okay kiddo, that’s why we have “freedom of speech” in our country, everyone has a voice, I just wanted you to know that no one discounted how you feel at all, but wanted you to understand how other girls feel also. For all you young gals that have parents that are attentive and educate you on these issues, I want you to feel grateful for those parents, you are the lucky ones! I know it’s a hard thing to think about being so young, the facts are girls are starting their womanhood much younger than before, I was 17!! My girls were 14-15, and now girls are starting at an average age of 9, which means between 9-12, which is right within the doll ages. Rudy cares for her reader and viewers more than any blogger or vlogger I have ever seen, we should applaud her for that. I promise you kiddo, life gets better with age, but it also gets hard, lean on the ones who care about you and you will make it just fine!!

While we aren’t quite ready for this at our house, we will be working on the deodorant craft soon as I just got some for my daughter. The doll company Lammily has a “Period Party” kit they sell for their dolls that includes panties & pad shaped stickers to put in the panties along with an informational booklet. Obviously there are companies out there that realize that dolls can be used as teaching tools too. I think that it is important to provide girls with a variety of ways to learn about things. If this helps girls to feel more comfortable with their bodies then I think it is a great idea.

I want to make the sunflower seeds soon! It’s hard to keep up with requests. These period kits started being requested over a year ago and I just now got to it!

    1. Anondolls
      February 24, 2017 at 6:41 pm –

You were right to answer the requests. I think it’s a little odd too, but I agree that girls shouldn’t be brought up to feel ashamed of a very natural thing. For girls and collectors who imagine older girls being represented by their dolls, this makes sense to do. I don’t think we need to shelter girls from periods.

I was very afraid when I first bled, and I was very young. If it was just a thing, like usibg the bathroom, I think we would all be better for it.

TLDR: You’re just doing your job and meeting the requests of your fans! God bless you for having the guts to stand by the decision!

Love your videos, going to make that dining booth soon!!!!

          February 24, 2017 at 6:46 pm –

Thank you very much! I just posted this on social media:

Some of the requests are interesting. However, if I get a girl saying she feels lonely and depressed because she has a period and none of her friends do and she wants pads for her doll, I’m crafting the pads. I’d rather help one and lose 100 people who don’t like it then not respond to something like that. Tugs at my heart strings. And when someone wants deodorant for their doll because they were made fun of for having to wear it, done. I have more heartbreaking stories that also go with my crafts, but you get the idea. ???

Dollylover, kiddo, it might be hard to accept this but I can honestly tell you there are a lot of lil girls that don’t have moms and don’t have someone help them understand this, I know from personal experience, it’s okay for you to have your opinion, no ones upset, it’s okay to not to want to do the craft, but some people do and they need to for personal reasons, I think it can be very embarrassing for girls, the truth is a lot of girls get there’s before it’s taught in school, and parents should teach about it way before then, if you think about the craft as a learning experience and nothing else, it might be a good one for you and your mom to do together, it’s a great way for such a touchy subject to be talked about while crafting, it is part of life if you are a young lady. Don’t be mad at Rudy, she has girls, she thought through it before she decided to do it, she had a large audience to work with. I’m a grandma, and having this craft to do I can sit my GD down and just the 2 of us and I can explain as we craft, it will be much easier to do. Hang in there kiddo.

The wonderful thing about crafting…if you don’t like something, you simply pass it by.
I never considered this for my own dolls when I was a girl and got my periods…however I collect (and play with!) more mature dolls, and I love bringing as much realism into my dioramas as possible. These products sit in my own bathroom, so there is no reason for them not to be in my dolls bathrooms as well!
      Periods shouldn’t be a taboo/inappropriate subject at all! It’s human nature! ?
