DIY American Girl Coconut Drinks

Ever since we posted the DIY Fruit Stand we have gotten a ton of requests to fill it up!  No one wants an empty fruit stand right? So, the first craft we made for it are these cute coconut drinks. They are awesome! This a very easy craft that kids can be hands on with. I even think that if you are having a Lea, Kanani, or any tropical themed birthday party, these would be a cute craft for all the guests to make and take home as party favors! The dowel caps come in a bag of 12 so that’s a lot of coconut drinks!

If you do not have a Hobby Lobby, type in wooden dowel caps 1 1/4″ in Google Search and several buying options will come up.

Materials Needed:

  • Scissors
  • Circle Hole Punch *Optional
  • Mini Straws
  • Toothpicks
  • Tiny Beads
  • Scrapbook Paper
  • Craft Foam *Orange Slices
  • Craft Paint
  • Puffy Paint
  • Dowel Caps 12 pcs. 1 1/4″ *Found at Hobby Lobby item #211177

TIPS:

  • If you don’t have puffy paint on hand, you can use hot glue as a substitute. Just paint over it while when it’s dry and be sure to stick in the umbrella and straw before it dries.
  • Any paper will work for the umbrellas, I just like the scrapbook paper for the designs. However, you can always color your own designs on plain white paper.
  • I used a hole punch for the oranges and umbrella. You can just trace circles and cut them out with scissors. You can also use scrapbook scissors for the umbrella if you want a cut edge!
  • I did not have a problem with the coconuts standing on their own. However, if yours won’t cooperate, you can take a nail file and lightly sand a flat surface on the bottoms of them.
  • Puffy paint normally takes about 4 hours to dry. However, since you are using a lot to fill it up, let it dry overnight. It hardens completely and the straw/toothpicks will be stuck into place.

This is one of my favorite smaller DYI projects. My granddaughter and I have several AG’s and other 18 inch dolls and even though I’ve purchased OG sets with a coconut in them it’s just one. Now we can have coconut drinks for all the doll’s in the family. Thanks great job.

Do you think that I would get the same results using white caulk instead of puffy paint?

    • Rudy February 3, 2016 at 9:55 pm – Reply

We’ve used caulk in the past, it will do the job!

Awesome craft! My daughter watched this and immediately put her shoes on telling me she is ready to go get the supplies. She loves your videos so much! What kind of hole punches do you use? I have several but I can never get the craft foam to fit into them (too thick). Thanks!

    • Rudy February 2, 2016 at 8:35 am – Reply

Haha, that’s too cute. The hole punches I use for craft foam are the Fiskars Thick. They will say “thick” on the package and on the hole punch. They are awesome! I always get thick over regular because the thick will work for everything, even paper if that’s all I’m punching.

This is such a genius idea! Could you make a doll binder or school supplies? My dolls need to have stationary. You could get ideas from the new American Girl flip-top desk, or from the old desk. ?

Soooooo cuuuuuute! Yes, please make more to fill up Lea’s Fruit Stand!!!! My friend is placing her Lea order on AG tonight, so thank you for telling me about the free shipping!!! I told her about it, and she was deciding between Lea, Maryellen, and Rebecca. She asked me which one she should get, I wasn’t quite sure. I immediately said “Not Rebecca.” Because 2 of our friends already have her. I was thinking she should get Maryellen because she is simply the best BeForever Character available!!!! However, she missed out on the last GOTY, Grace, whom she wishes she would have bought. So, I finally gave her a TON of reasons why she should get Lea, and she gave in!!! I am so happy for her!! Is the free shipping for single items, too, or just on Lea’s whole collection?

    • Rudy January 31, 2016 at 5:06 pm – Reply

It’s free shipping on anything in her collection! Great deal!
