How to Make American Girl Gingerbread House

This was a fun craft because it was a Craft Challenge given to us by MommyN MeAG.  Once you watch our craft, be sure to check out their video to see if they liked it! You might notice that a few things look similar to the American Girl Sugar and Spice Baking Set.  That’s because we did replicate a few things from it! We hope you like the printables and Just Craft It.

Materials Needed:

  1. Mod Podge or White Glue
  2. Puffy Paint
  3. Beads, Buttons, or Pom Poms
  4. Craft Foam
  5. Lids *I used a small orange juice lid and a mason jar lid
  6. Hot Glue *Foam or regular glue will work, but it will take longer to dry and move forward during the craft
  7. Hole Punch
  8. Scissors
  9. Small Candy Cane Box Printables
  10. Large Candy Cane Boxes
  11. Gingerbread House Template Printable

TIPS:

  • For foam board, thick foam sheets, and cardboard you nee to have a hole punch that works on thick material.  I pictured the ones we use below to give you an idea of what to look for.  They are worth it!  This is the same kind we used for the Macarons!

thick hole punch

Watch and leave a comment if you can guess the flavor of the white gum drops!

Rudy, what did you use as a base for the house to sit upon? I didn’t see anything listed in the materials list, nor did I see it mentioned in the video. Is it just the thicker craft foam, or a lid of some kind?

I used 3/16″ foam board and cut a circle. You can really use anything.

It was VERY helpful for me since I can’t buy them!

Where do you buy the thicker craft foam? The only place I’ve found is JoAnns and they only have the thick white foam. I’ve been to walmart, target, michaels, joanns, ace moore and have had no luck.

I can’t get my foam to fit in my hole punch for the cookies:( which one did you use? thanks

    • Rudy
      December 23, 2015 at 5:29 pm –

You have to use a THICK hole punch. it will be labeled for thick materials. I updated the post showing you which one works. It comes in different sizes.

I don’t think there is a sub for hot glue that isn’t Elmer’s glue

    • Rudy
      December 23, 2015 at 7:36 am –

Regular glue will work for the foam pieces, it will just take a much longer time to dry without sliding.

I don’t go to hobby lobby. that’s why I asked

We think the white flavour would be cream soda.

But we were also wondering why you made one side of the door squiggly and the others straight.

    • Rudy
      December 23, 2015 at 7:35 am –

We made the squiggly by the door because that’s how the American Girl gingerbread house looks from the Sugar & Spice Set ?

    • Rudy
      December 23, 2015 at 7:35 am –

      We LOVE Cream Soda!

buzzy: In the video she said she got the Candy Canes from Hobby Lobby ? But you could probably find some at Michaels! I personally haven’t looked, but that’s because I didn’t need any the most recent time I went to Michaels, and I rarely go. It gets expensive when you have to buy a lot of materials, and my mom said that we can get supplies for one project at a time. This is (Probably) next for me! OR the pizza party set!

Julia M H I totally agree! I will have to at least make the Gum Drops! They were probably my favorite part! Such a clever idea! And I love that you don’t have to use any doll dishes, because I don’t have Bowls(?), and I love it when you just used recycled materials for your crafts! And a lid is a GRRREAT idea! Thanks again Rudy!

I think the white gum drops are peppermint. I love this craft! I am going to make this on Thursday right after I make my gingerbread house. Do you know what I could substitute for puffy paint, as I do not have any at the moment?

    • Rudy
      December 21, 2015 at 5:59 pm –

You can mix craft paint with shaving cream!
