How to Make American Girl Gingerbread House
How to Make American Girl Gingerbread House
This was a fun craft because it was a Craft Challenge given to us by MommyN MeAG. Once you watch our craft, be sure to check out their video to see if they liked it! You might notice that a few things look similar to the American Girl Sugar and Spice Baking Set. That’s because we did replicate a few things from it! We hope you like the printables and Just Craft It.
Materials Needed:
- Mod Podge or White Glue
- Puffy Paint
- Beads, Buttons, or Pom Poms
- Craft Foam
- Lids *I used a small orange juice lid and a mason jar lid
- Hot Glue *Foam or regular glue will work, but it will take longer to dry and move forward during the craft
- Hole Punch
- Scissors
- Small Candy Cane Box Printables
- Large Candy Cane Boxes
- Gingerbread House Template Printable
TIPS:
- For foam board, thick foam sheets, and cardboard you nee to have a hole punch that works on thick material. I pictured the ones we use below to give you an idea of what to look for. They are worth it! This is the same kind we used for the Macarons!
Watch and leave a comment if you can guess the flavor of the white gum drops!

Rudy, what did you use as a base for the house to sit upon? I didn’t see anything listed in the materials list, nor did I see it mentioned in the video. Is it just the thicker craft foam, or a lid of some kind?
January 20, 2016 at 2:15 pm –
I used 3/16″ foam board and cut a circle. You can really use anything.
January 20, 2016 at 1:04 pm –
I haven’t eaten them in years, but white gumdrops used to be spice flavored!

December 29, 2015 at 1:44 pm –
buzzy: If you are like me and don’t go to craft stores very often, you can use the tutorial HERE: https://www.americangirlideas.com/diy-american-girl-candy-canes/
It was VERY helpful for me since I can’t buy them!
December 29, 2015 at 1:41 pm –
Ah. Thanks Rudy! (Lol I didn’t ask the question, but thanks for the helpful tip!) I might have to consider getting one of those!
December 29, 2015 at 1:39 pm –
Miri: Did you get Grace yet?!?!?!?!!! Sure sounds like it! (Because Grace commented) ? ?
December 29, 2015 at 12:02 pm –
This craft is adorable! I want to make it so badly! We would never have thought of shaving cream with craft paint! Keep up the GREAT ideas! PS I love your blog and YouTube channel. I watch it every day, checking if you upload another video or post a new craft(so does Miri). -Grace, your fellow craftsman(Miri told me to put that). ? <3

Could you do how to make new year party things and maybe some treats or toys??
-Thanks!
December 25, 2015 at 10:10 am –
Where do you buy the thicker craft foam? The only place I’ve found is JoAnns and they only have the thick white foam. I’ve been to walmart, target, michaels, joanns, ace moore and have had no luck.

I can’t get my foam to fit in my hole punch for the cookies:( which one did you use? thanks
December 23, 2015 at 5:29 pm –
You have to use a THICK hole punch. it will be labeled for thick materials. I updated the post showing you which one works. It comes in different sizes.
December 23, 2015 at 5:54 pm –
Just saw the tips. Oy. Thanks as always!!!

I don’t think there is a sub for hot glue that isn’t Elmer’s glue
December 23, 2015 at 7:36 am –
Regular glue will work for the foam pieces, it will just take a much longer time to dry without sliding.
December 23, 2015 at 7:04 am –
I don’t go to hobby lobby. that’s why I asked
December 23, 2015 at 7:37 am –
Michael’s doe have the tiny candy canes. They just look slightly different.
December 23, 2015 at 7:03 am –
thanks!!
December 23, 2015 at 6:08 am –
We think the white flavour would be cream soda.
But we were also wondering why you made one side of the door squiggly and the others straight.
December 23, 2015 at 7:35 am –
We made the squiggly by the door because that’s how the American Girl gingerbread house looks from the Sugar & Spice Set ?
December 23, 2015 at 7:35 am –
We LOVE Cream Soda!
December 22, 2015 at 8:01 pm –
buzzy: In the video she said she got the Candy Canes from Hobby Lobby ? But you could probably find some at Michaels! I personally haven’t looked, but that’s because I didn’t need any the most recent time I went to Michaels, and I rarely go. It gets expensive when you have to buy a lot of materials, and my mom said that we can get supplies for one project at a time. This is (Probably) next for me! OR the pizza party set!
December 23, 2015 at 7:37 am –
Sounds like you have an awesome mom!
December 22, 2015 at 2:09 pm –
I think the white gumdrops may be marshmallow? I love this! So cute.
December 22, 2015 at 12:19 pm –
Hi! I love it! But is there any other way that if you don’t have puffy paint to make the ginger bread house!? Like normal paint? Thanks for the house!
December 22, 2015 at 9:39 am –
sorry i meant peppermint!
December 22, 2015 at 9:39 am –
the white is either wintergreen or pepermint
December 22, 2015 at 7:20 am –
i did not mean to put a question mark at the end of that comment.
December 22, 2015 at 7:19 am –
Where did the Candy canes come from? I want to know if they sell them at Michaels?
December 22, 2015 at 5:15 am –
This is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO cute! Im going to make this right now!We love your ideas! Thanks!
December 22, 2015 at 5:14 am –
The white gum drop flavor i think is pineapple!
Thank You!
December 21, 2015 at 10:19 pm –
Julia M H I totally agree! I will have to at least make the Gum Drops! They were probably my favorite part! Such a clever idea! And I love that you don’t have to use any doll dishes, because I don’t have Bowls(?), and I love it when you just used recycled materials for your crafts! And a lid is a GRRREAT idea! Thanks again Rudy!
December 21, 2015 at 7:24 pm –
Yay!!! I have been waiting for this!!!!! So Excited! Thanks!
December 21, 2015 at 6:28 pm –
Peppermint! lOVE IT!
December 21, 2015 at 6:01 pm –
Yum yum yummy! Lol I went and ate a cookie during the middle of the video? This is awesome Rudy! I think the White Gum Drop is Peppermint or Coconut! Am I right?! Maybe even Marshmallow?!
December 21, 2015 at 5:15 pm –
I think the white gum drops are peppermint. I love this craft! I am going to make this on Thursday right after I make my gingerbread house. Do you know what I could substitute for puffy paint, as I do not have any at the moment?
December 21, 2015 at 5:59 pm –
You can mix craft paint with shaving cream!
