DIY American Girl Onion Rings Craft

This DIY American Girl Onion Rings craft is so easy and fun. This is a craft for everyone, even the youngest in our crew had fun making these. Beware, you will get sticky messy fingers, but the end result is worth it! My friend Kathy had an idea to use the sand for the crispy fried batter on the onion rings and it couldn’t have been a more perfect idea. We love onion rings and our favorite restaurant is famous for having an onion ring tower. Red Robin….YUM!  And although I love Red Robin, my favorite onion rings have always been those of Cheeburger Cheeburger. They are freshly cut, dipped and fried. They are skinny and oh so good. Have you ever been to a Cheeburger Cheeburger?

Materials Needed:

  • Sand
  • Clay of Choice
  • Mod Podge
  • Craft Wire
  • Small Caps
  • Puffy Paint

TIPS:

  • We used Mod Podge to dip the rings into the sand. When they are dry, you also need to give them a top coat. You can use Mod Podge again and brush it on top, or you can use a Triple Thick Spray. I was just introduced to this sealant and I love it! So far I know you can purchase it on Amazon or at Michaels. It’s a great item to use your 60% off coupon on!
  • This time we used the Terra Cotta colored model magic so we could skip the painting once dry. The sand might not cover every spot on the clay, so it’s nice to have a similar color underneath so the rings look natural.

Watch and tell us your favorite onion ring dipping sauce!

Kathy made her onion rings stands a little differently than we did. Check them out, they are adorable!

This was made from a three pronged Pizza spacer and 1″ Plastic Rings and an acrylic makeup handle. It was painted black and then the sauce containers fit nicely in the rings.

I like the Stand and the Dips, but might make my Onion Rings a different color. More yellow, and only the slightest bit of sand, if I even use sand. Excellent idea though!!! I have to make those dips!!!! Too cute!
